Latin America. Siemens Smart Infrastructure announced a collaboration agreement with Microsoft to transform access to Internet of Things (IoT) data in buildings.
The collaboration will enable interoperability between Siemens' digital building platform, Building X, and Microsoft Azure IoT Operations, enabled by Azure Arc. Azure IoT Operations, a component of this adaptive cloud approach that provides tools and infrastructure to connect edge devices and integrate data, enabling organizations to optimize their operations and harness the potential of their IoT environments.
The interoperability of Building X and Azure IoT Operations is making IoT-based data more accessible to enterprise customers in commercial buildings, data centers, and higher education institutions, giving them the insights needed to improve sustainability and operations.
This solution enables automatic onboarding and monitoring by bringing data points such as temperature, pressure, or indoor air quality into the cloud, for assets such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, valves, and actuators. It will even allow customers to develop their own internal use cases, such as energy monitoring and space use optimization.
One-click onboarding of devices to the cloud and efficient data sharing will offer customers unprecedented freedom to design their IoT architecture. Siemens hardware and software components can be seamlessly integrated without being limited to a single vendor ecosystem.
The collaboration leverages well-known and established open standards in the industry, including the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web of Things (WoT) standards, which describe hardware and software metadata and interfaces, as well as the Platform Open Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) for data communication to the cloud.
Both Siemens and Microsoft are members of the W3C and the OPC Foundation, which develop standards and guidelines to build an industry based on accessibility, interoperability, privacy, and security.
This solution represents one of the first IoT data integrations based exclusively on open standards between different vendors.
Interoperability between Siemens Building X and Azure IoT Operations will be available on the market from the second half of 2025.
Building X is a digital platform for buildings that helps clients digitize, manage, and optimize their facility operations, paving the way to sustainable, autonomous, and profitable assets. It is part of Siemens Xcelerator, an open enterprise digital platform that enables customers to accelerate their digital transformation more easily, faster and at scale.
