Latin America. Neumann announced the return of one of the most legendary microphones in recording history: the M 50 V, a faithful re-edition of the legendary tube microphone that has shaped the sound of countless classical recordings and film scores.
Introduced in 1951, the M 50 became the benchmark for orchestral recordings and was instrumental in the development of Decca Tree technology thanks to its unique directional characteristics and extraordinary impulse behavior. Today, the M 50 V brings this heritage into the present with great attention to detail and subtle improvements to modern workflows.
Neumann has retained the original acoustic concept, including the small-diaphragm omni capsule mounted on a 40mm dial, while introducing a titanium diaphragm to improve stability and longevity. This ensures the same vivid image and powerful bass response that have made the M 50 legendary.
The M 50 V combines the original circuit design with a specially selected extremely low-noise sub-miniature tube and RF-tight connector to ensure high interference immunity in today's environments. The supplied NM V power supply automatically adapts to the local mains voltage and supports both the new M 50 V and the historic M 50 microphone.
Each M 50 V is made to order by Neumann's dedicated service and quality control team to ensure uncompromising attention to detail and authenticity. Production is deliberately limited to maintain the highest standards.
A decades-long history
The Neumann M 50 has more than seven decades of glorious history. In the 1950s, it became the microphone of choice for the Decca Tree technique, developed by Decca Records' sound engineers for stereo recordings of orchestral music. This arrangement remains the gold standard for classical music and film music to this day.
The M 50 characterized the sound of countless classical music albums, as it was frequently used by leading sound engineers for orchestral and concert recordings. Legendary film composers and sound engineers also relied on the M 50 for its vivid image and natural depth, making it a staple of Hollywood sets.
Beyond classical music, the M 50 has also been used in pop and jazz sessions as a room microphone for drums, horns and ensembles thanks to its unique omnidirectional capsule and gentle high frequency boost.
