Genelec has released Aural ID 2.1, its latest HRTF-based binaural headphone monitoring app, which delivers faithful headphone mixes with impeccable spatial positioning, depth, and tonal balance, and incorporates a number of powerful enhancements to streamline workflows and improve overall system transparency.
It works as a virtual sound card for Mac, making it the ideal complement to any professional headset brand, as well as being a key element of Genelec's growing UNIO monitoring ecosystem.
The main new feature of the 2.1 update is a clearer and more intuitive file management structure: Aural ID profiles are organized in a folder called "Profiles", while user settings can be stored separately in a folder called "Settings". This improves clarity and control, allowing audio professionals to easily manage their personal HRTF profiles and session-specific settings.
The user interface has also been refined, with the output and envelope EQ controls now accessible directly from the main interface, allowing for faster adjustments and smoother creative decision-making. Settings pages have been enhanced with clear commit workflows, ensuring that changes are intentional and securely saved in settings only when approved.
Flexibility and accuracy are maintained thanks to enhanced bypass functionalities, including low-frequency envelope sections and output EQ, which allow users to instantly compare processed and raw signals.
Support for head tracking and virtual monitoring channel configuration pages have been significantly refined to provide a smoother and more intuitive setup process. Aural ID 2.1 continues to include standalone head tracking software that uses the camera connected to the computer for tracking, with improved controls.
Tools for personal calibration of virtual speaker azimuth and elevation position, and subjective sound color, are also now easier to use, improving the accuracy of personal monitoring.
Improvements to the overall performance and responsiveness of the user interface include more efficient HRTF profile loading and improved audio processing, ensuring reliable operation even in demanding production environments.
Real-time system information is also enhanced with the addition of an audio buffering status indicator on the main display, providing users with immediate feedback on processing conditions.
