Latin America. OpenAI and Samsung announced the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) for their strategic alliance to accelerate advancements in global AI data center infrastructure and jointly develop future technologies in relevant fields.
This far-reaching collaboration will bring together the collective strengths and leadership of Samsung companies in semiconductors, data centers, shipbuilding, cloud services and maritime technologies.
The signing ceremony was held at Samsung's corporate headquarters in Seoul, Korea, with the participation of Young Hyun Jun, Vice President and CEO of Samsung Electronics; Sung-an Choi, Vice President and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries; Sechul Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T; and Junehee Lee, president and CEO of Samsung SDS.
Samsung Electronics
Samsung Electronics will work with OpenAI as a strategic memory partner to supply advanced semiconductor solutions to OpenAI's global Stargate initiative. With memory demand projected to reach up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, Samsung will help meet this need with its extensive portfolio of high-performance, energy-efficient DRAM solutions.
As a comprehensive semiconductor solutions provider, Samsung's leading technologies span memory, logic, and casting, with a diverse portfolio that supports the entire AI workflow, from training to inference.
The company also brings differentiated capabilities in advanced chip packaging and heterogeneous integration between memory and system semiconductors, allowing it to offer unique solutions to OpenAI.
Samsung SDS
Samsung SDS has established a potential alliance with OpenAI to jointly develop AI data centers and offer enterprise AI services.
Leveraging its expertise in advanced data center technologies, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI on the design, development, and operation of Stargate AI data centers. Under the LOI, Samsung SDS will be able to provide consulting, implementation, and management services to companies looking to integrate OpenAI's AI models into their internal systems.
In addition, Samsung SDS signed a resale agreement for OpenAI's services in Korea and plans to support local businesses in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise solutions.
Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries
Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will collaborate with OpenAI to power global AI data centers, with a special focus on the joint development of floating data centers.
Floating data centers offer advantages over conventional data centers, as they can address land scarcity, reduce cooling costs, and reduce carbon emissions. However, its technical complexity has limited its large-scale deployment.
Building on their proprietary technologies, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will also explore opportunities in floating power plant and control center projects, in addition to floating data center infrastructure.
With this historic partnership with OpenAI, Samsung plans to fully support Korea's goals of positioning itself as one of the top three nations in AI and generating new opportunities in this field.
Samsung is also exploring wider adoption of ChatGPT within its companies to facilitate AI transformation in the workplace.
