Deficit in IT talent: lack of skills threatens the sector

Déficit en talento IT

Colombia. The last few years have been marked by an accelerated evolution of information technology (IT) penetration in companies, which intensified after the pandemic.

Currently, it is evident how companies that have not adopted digital technologies are destined to be left behind, at the same time that digital tools have proven to be essential to improve efficiency, increase productivity, reduce costs and improve the customer experience, so their incorporation in any type of organization today is key.

However, and despite the benefits that this area brings with it, its accelerated growth has also meant a big problem for companies, as today there is a significant gap in terms of the supply and demand of IT talent. According to Korn Ferry, a global HR and executive search consultancy, this trend will not diminish but on the contrary, it will increase in the coming years, reaching a total of 85 million unfilled jobs by 2030, this talent deficit could mean a loss of about 8.5 trillion dollars in annual revenue for the IT sector.

In this sense, a recent study by the same company applied globally determined that investing in technological talent focused on supporting internal professional evolution translates into a competitive advantage, since currently the human team looks for growth opportunities in companies, otherwise they will look elsewhere, which will increase the turnover of this area. Of the total 1,128 employees surveyed, 24% indicated that the lack of a clear development path is the main reason why they decide to change companies, while 55% expect turnover to increase.

For their part, the leaders of these departments are the ones who must think differently about how to engage and retain their employees, implementing strategies that allow them to continue developing their professional skills and knowledge. This is based on the fact that 74% of the leaders surveyed indicated that their organizations lack the necessary capabilities and skills for the future of the company, while 37% said that the improvement or reskilling of employees is the main strategy to combat the talent shortage.

Based on this reality and to face this panorama, Korn Ferry has been working on a pioneering platform in our country - in alliance with Microsoft 365, specifically through Teams - that allows a solution to this problem, helping companies (through their own content) to develop a more "transformational" approach to talent in the IT area. instead of having to incur in the search for new collaborators, which impacts costs and project development times.

"Korn Ferry Career is an application that allows you to create a growth experience for IT employees, their leaders and the company, identifying, together with the HR area and expert consulting, what are the current capabilities (both soft and technical) of the team and how to take better advantage of them, what kind of gaps exist and how to cover them. and what is the path to follow so that they can train and evolve their professional profile based on the needs that the company presents today," explains Gabriela Castro, president of the Andean Region of Korn Ferry.

In detail, the experience of the consulting firm allowed it to develop different courses and training that help workers improve their professional shortcomings and develop new ones, focusing not only on them being able to lead the area in the future, but also exploring new fields of work thanks to the support provided by the organization.

"This application follows the objective of democratizing organizational development, which is what companies are currently looking for. In other words, not leaving the issue of professional development only in the hands of managers or the HR area, but rather allowing the employee to develop within the organization in a structured and established way," concludes the specialist.
