Christmas lighting in Medellín turns 50

Colombia. For 50 years, EPM Lighting has provided great moments shared with the family. Precisely, these stories narrated by the community on social networks with the label #AlumbradosEPM or on the website www.alumbradosepm.com.co will be the energy with which the Alumbrados will be lit, in a symbolic way, on December 2 in Medellín.

Five decades ago, EPM began to elaborate the Alumbrados de Medellín as its most beautiful gift for the city, its inhabitants and its visitors. They used to be carried out by the Public Improvement Society and private companies. Today, the Alumbrados are one of the symbols of the capital of Antioquia, a source of pride and tourist attraction that every year contribute to boost the local economy and generate new employment opportunities, providing well-being and development to the community.

In 1967, when the Alumbrados were born in the Miguel de Aguinaga Building (former headquarters of EPM), The Bolivar Park and La Playa Avenue, in the center of Medellín, bulb chains were installed on the trees without any form or concept. Fifty years later, the Alumbrados are a multimedia, sensory staging that tells stories, transmits values and invites enjoyment with loved ones. A journey full of innovation, technology, playfulness and art.

The General Manager of EPM, Jorge Londoño De la Cuesta, indicated that this year the decoration is called Alumbrados EPM, 50 years of stories at Christmas. In total there are 37 million bulbs, about 50,000 figures, 1,130 kilometers of luminous hose with LED technology and 15.5 tons of metallic paper of different colors, distributed in 40 points of Medellín, which will give life to the Christmas Lights in their 50 years. A team of 286 people, including designers, architects, engineers, craftsmen, welders and assembly crews participate in this beautiful EPM gift for the entire community.

For the second time, the central node of the Lighting, where the bulk of the decoration will be, will be located in Carabobo Norte, with emphasis on the North Park, which will again have free admission to see the Lights, but not to use the mechanical attractions.

The time to see the Illuminated will be every day, from December 2 to January 8, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Activities hand in hand with technology
Among the activities included in the Christmas lighting of Medellín, some with the latest audiovisual technology stand out, including:

A video mapping that will be projected on the façade of the House of Music, in the Park of Desires, with daily functions at 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. It can be seen between December 2 and January 8, 2018.
In the center of the lake of the North Park will rise an energy tower, 20 meters high, as a tribute to the beginnings of the Illuminated, in a mixture of water, light, sound and color. Each night a show will be offered with a luminous water fountain, which will have projection of images and jets of "dancing" water.
On four screens will be projected historical images of five decades of christmas lights. A journey back in time through one of the most beautiful symbols of Medellín. In this itinerary the community will be able to interact with rotating puzzles with Christmas images.
