Cledis redefines high-end visualization solutions

InfoComm. A week before InfoComm 2016 kicks off, Sony announced the launch of its Cledis display technology, a new large-scale canvas solution that builds on Sony's self-streaming display capabilities, but with very thin LEDs as a light source, to deliver a single, high-resolution image at an unprecedented scale.

The solution is designed to redefine the landscape of large-scale viewing and visual entertainment by offering an entirely new visual experience that is not currently possible even with the highest-end conventional LED array.

"Our new technology is a huge new type of canvas that offers unprecedented flexibility and creativity in high-level visual entertainment and simulation," said Damien Weissenburger, Business Manager, Corporate and Education Solutions, Sony Professional Solutions. "Compared to other solutions available today for large-scale viewing, this is a breakthrough in depth, contrast, wide viewing angle, color, resolution and true visual impact."

The new canvas technology is designed for a wide variety of commercial applications where monitors with complex details and large-scale realistic simulation are required. Its implementation varies from industrial product design and automotive manufacturing, to monitors in amusement parks, museums, high-movement hotel lobbies and showrooms, as well as in conference rooms and broadcast studios.

Cledis (integrated diode structure that emits crystal light) adapts effortlessly to match the greatest creative ambitions. The innovative borderless design allows several mosaics to be aligned perfectly so that the human eye cannot appreciate the gaps between them. The result is an immersive and completely realistic image with a viewing angle of almost 180 degrees, with which you create an image so large that it would only exist in your imagination.

Redefines the concept of high-end display technology
Cledis self-emitting display technology uses very thin R (red), G (green) and B (blue) LEDs installed on the screen surface, in which each pixel emits light independently. Each pixel consists of a very thin LED R, G and B independent, with a light source of only 0.003 mm2 in size. The remaining surface area is more than 99% black.

Coupled with the technology's isotropic luminescence, which offers the same color reproduction and brightness for viewers from any angle, the high ratio of black on the surface features a high contrast ratio in both lighted and dark environments. The light source installed on the surface also considerably improves the efficiency of the light used.

The screen is capable of reaching a viewing angle of almost 180 degrees, with uniformity in the image from corner to corner in terms of brightness and color, even on a large screen. It also has a brightness of 1000 cd/m2 (1000 nits), which produces images with a color depth of 10 bits and a wide range of colors (approximately 140% sRGB).

The solution also features a Sony-exclusive pixel circuit for fast video response with a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second (fps). This is essential for sports, concerts or training simulations, where users need to present images on large screens without lag or motion artifacts.

The scalable canvas is comprised of multiple displays (each measuring 403mm × 453mm) that can be stitched together to create a larger display with varying size and aspect ratio depending on each application's requirements. For example, a large, high-quality monitor 9.7m wide and 2.7m high (8K x 2K) can be built by combining 144 independent displays. The screens have no edges, so they can be combined to create immersive, large projections without experiencing any interruption and with the appearance of being a single panel.

The Cledis display solution will be publicly unveiled for the first time at InfoComm 2016 (booth C7708) in June in an 8K x 2K configuration, 9.7 m x 2.7 m, and is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2017.
