. By the end of this year, Taiwan will have the world's largest production of single-layer Blu-ray discs, due to which Japanese manufacturers have outsourced production to this country, due to the devaluation of the yen in financial markets. In 2009, Sony, Panasonic and TDK had market shares of 23.7%, 21.8% and 19.9% respectively, accounting for 70% of the single-layer Blu-ray disc market and 100% for dual-layer discs. However, by the end of this year Taiwanese production will take between 15% and 20% of the global market of the latter, thanks to the certification of the Blu-ray Disc Association for the two Taiwanese companies Ritek and CMC Magnetics.
According to the Japanese market research company Techno Systems Research, sales of Blu-ray discs will reach 113 million units this year, of which 80% will be single-layer discs and 25 Gb of capacity as they are cheaper, while double-layer and 50Gb will account for between 18% and 20% of sales.
