Christie installs AV technology at Mexico's largest refinery

Christie

Mexico. The recently opened Olmeca Refinery, the largest oil plant in Mexico and one of the three largest in Latin America, has implemented a variety of Christie solutions in its control rooms and offices, including LED and LCD video walls, video wall processors and a 30,000-lumen 3DLP projector.

The Olmeca Refinery is located in the port of Dos Bocas in the Mexican state of Tabasco and has been developed to have a capacity of 340,000 barrels per day of crude oil processing. The construction site covers a total of 556 hectares. The project consists of 17 processing plants, 56 storage tanks, 34 spheres, workshops, administrative and service buildings and control rooms.

The facility required a main control room to oversee and monitor oil production, several control rooms for surveillance throughout the refinery, and boardrooms to increase communication and productivity.

Video walls were instrumental in displaying scalable video content from multiple sources simultaneously, including a wide range of camera feeds, remote SCADA systems, and productivity KPIs.

"Christie's video walls were chosen because of their high quality and brightness, and because of the advantage of having a complete portfolio of control rooms with a single brand," said Dimas Lopez, general director of Soluciones en Tecnología de México (STM), the Christie partner that acted as an integrator for the project.

christieEight 1.4mm pixel pitch Christie Core Series LED video walls were installed in the main control room, each measuring 8.5 x 3.2 meters. "These systems stand out for their flexibility and scalability, as well as for their low maintenance," said Dimas López.

In the tactical room, two Christie LCD video walls were implemented in 4x2 configuration with HD resolution (1920x1080) and sub-1 mm bezel. Another of the control rooms incorporated a 3x2 LCD video wall, also with HD resolution (1920x1080) and sub-1 mm bezel.

To manage all the video walls, 30 Christie video wall processing nodes were installed, allowing users to simultaneously view, hear and interact with any source of information throughout the refinery's control rooms.

"In the end, the video walls installed allow the different teams of the refinery to share critical information in the different control rooms, combining several sources simultaneously to obtain an accurate view of what is happening at all times and make the best decision in the shortest possible time," explained Dimas López.

On the other hand, 16 Christie LCD panels of 4K UHD resolution were installed in the different boardrooms of the refinery. The refinery also incorporated a 30,000-lumen Christie 3DLP projector into a room to show the history of the Olmec civilization.

"The installation process with Christie's field engineers was smooth and they provided us with great local support during the design and installation phases," says Dimas Lopez. "The system has worked just as we designed it with Renan Lazcano from Christie's Mexico office. From the feedback we have received from the end user, we have been very successful," concludes Dimas López.
