Mapping recreates works by Michelangelo in Sistine Chapel

International. A show that combines art, dance and music, with special effects and advanced projection and video-mapping techniques, presents an immersive experience in which the life and work of the Italian artist Michelangelo Buonarroti is narrated, as well as the conception of the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, his greatest pictorial creation.

To achieve this impressive audio-visual experience and meet the expectations of the multimedia show Guidizio Universale, Michelangelo and the secrets of the Sistine Chapel, which is presented at the sumptuous Conciliazione Auditorium, in the Italian city of Rome, Panasonic laser projection technology was used. Conceived as a permanent show, Guidizio Universale, has surpassed the first 300 performances in November 2018 with total success.

To carry out this ambitious and innovative project, the production company Artainment Worldwide Shows and the Italian director Marco Balich, famous for having directed and produced the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games in Turin 2006 and Rio 2016, turned to Panasonic and its line of high-brightness laser projectors as the technological allies that would allow them to capture the rich visual content generated digitally, in the wide vault of the Conciliazione Auditorium, and thus give life to a dynamic canvas that transports the spectators to the interior of the Sistine Chapel during the sixteenth century.

Guidizio Universale is a work that, over the course of an hour, takes viewers on an artistic journey like no other. The visual content, curated by acclaimed video designer Luke Halls, is complemented by music composed by John Metcalfe, who previously worked with artists such as U2, Blur and Coldplay, as well as a dance routine choreographed by Fotis Nikolau, and a light show designed by Rob Halliday and Bruno Poet. The title track, composed by Sting, accentuates what is a veritable waste of talent and creativity.

This multidisciplinary show uses 30 Panasonic laser projectors, with DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology, divided between the five sectors that comprise the 270° surround stage that extends from wall to wall and almost completely surrounds the spectators. Eight 31,000-lumen PT-RZ31K projectors were placed on the side walls, while six 20,000 lumens PT-RZ21K projectors, along with a pair of PT-RZ31K, were mounted on the vaulted ceiling of the enclosure.

For its part, both the proscenium and the front wall house four PT-RZ31K projectors, each, and another four PT-RZ21K, these equipped with ULTRA-short throw lenses EL-D75LE95, are used in an overhead position to display images directly on stage. Finally, a pair of PT-RZ12K projectors of 12,000 lumens are responsible for mapping a superrealistic three-dimensional replica of Michelangelo's David.

The show has brought together the most outstanding talents of music, theater and video production, including scientific advice from the Vatican Museums, to offer the public an unforgettable sensory odyssey that reinterprets one of the most culturally relevant artistic works in the world. The contribution of Panasonic Visual Systems Solutions, a division of Panasonic Corporation focused on this type of large-scale projects, helped artists and creators to concentrate on the realization of the event, through a reliable solution that from the beginning met the requested requirements.

Guidizio Universale, Michelangelo and the secrets of the Sistine Chapel, has been presented permanently since March 2017, with performances scheduled in 90-day cycles so that the public can purchase their tickets in advance.
