Philips Lighting turns on a new light in Rio de Janeiro

Brazil. Philips Lighting announced the completion of four major lighting projects for the city of Rio de Janeiro to improve its infrastructure ahead of the 2016 sporting event. Organizers expect more than half a million tourists to visit the city for the games this summer.

The massive change of image in the lighting includes the main roads of the city and tourist places: Porto Maravilha, Arco Metropolitano and the roads of the Elevado do Joá are equipped with energy efficiency in LED lighting, which will contribute to greater safety and energy savings. The Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) will offer its visitors a unique light and audio experience with LED lighting that interacts with ambient music.

"As a world leader in lighting we are pleased to partner with Rio de Janeiro in preparing the city for its international visits while also providing a legacy to its population for years to come. Deliveries in LED lighting improvements such as increased safety and reduced energy bills are enabling the city to address economic, environmental and social issues at the same time," said Yoon Young Kim, Managing Director of Philips Lighting Brazil.

Newport area and two roads get an LED makeover
The port region, called Porto Maravilha, was revitalized by the Porto Novo Concessionaire. As part of the renovation of the project, the area was equipped with 750 Philips GreenVision Xceed LEDs, which will provide up to 50 percent energy savings compared to conventional lighting. In addition to this technology, both tunnels in the region have been equipped with Philips LED Tunnel BWP350 lighting fixtures, which ensure safe levels of lighting for drivers.

The entire LED lighting system installed in the Port is managed by Philips CityTouch, a public lighting system that integrates with the Operations Control Center (CCO) of the Porto Novo Concessionaire, allowing remote control of each light point and maintenance programming. The system also allows remote adjustment of lighting levels according to the specific needs of the area, which significantly reduces electricity consumption.

The Metropolitan Arc, the highway that is located around the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, which connects the Puerto Itaguaí region has been equipped with 4,360 Philips GreenVision Xceed Solar lighting fixtures. Each luminaire has an integrated solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity, plus they provide a sustainable lighting option. Philips Lighting participated in this project in collaboration with Kyocera Solar, a company specialized in the manufacture and distribution of solar electric energy solutions.

Elevado do Joá, another important road located in the western part of the city and connecting Largo da Barra to São Conrado uses 986 Philips FlowBase LED lights and 369 Philips GreenVision Xceed LED lights, to reduce energy consumption and to provide uniform and efficient lighting in the four tunnels along the road.

Museu do Amanhã attracts visitors with dynamic and interactive lighting
Philips Lighting collaborated with the Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow), a new tourist attraction in Rio de Janeiro with the "Luminotechnics Project", which was developed by the architect Mônica Lobo, from LD Studio. The last area of the museum, Oca da Imaginação (Imagination Hut), which takes the visitor into the distant future was equipped with exclusive and dynamic Philips LED lighting fixtures (Philips Color Kinetics iColor MR gen3 and iW Burst Powercore), which can reproduce various colors and interact with ambient music. With this type of stage lighting, visitors can enjoy a unique and interactive experience.

According to the architect and lighting designer of the Amanhã Museum, Mônica Luz Lobo, there was great attention in the integration of all lighting fixtures to highlight the elegant architecture of the building, in addition to the commitment to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system.
