International. Making OLED lighting an affordable, accessible and popular alternative is Philips' goal by the end of 2012, company executives have revealed. This will be driven by the product offering and a decrease in the costs of this technology.
Dietmar Thomas, communication specialist at Philips, explained that the large investments that have been made in this technology will lead to a significant drop in the price of OLED panels, which will allow users to consider OLEDs as an important lighting alternative.
"Philips has invested about 40 million euros to increase the production capacity of its plants up to about 10 times, which will lower the price and offer OLED modules from 10 or 20 euros. With that price we will be able to enter the mass market and have products available in any local store," said the official.
In addition to the above, he stressed that in addition to a decrease in costs it is also necessary to work to popularize this type of devices, their properties and uses. "We have to sell OLEDs as pretty lights, because when people have an OLED light in their hands for the first time they are amazed," Thomas said of the end-user reception.
He also added that "the issue is to show what an OLED is and can do. In two or three years they will be flexible, and can be incorporated into chairs, bathrooms or even a shower to create beautiful and functional designs. There will be a new way of thinking about lighting design."
