IP audio system how to sound tunnels?

Brazil. The IP audio system is an increasingly recurrent solution in sound design projects, mainly because it offers a set of differentiated and special benefits, such as considerable cost savings. That's why you, the installer, need to learn all about this technology if you want to make your portfolio even more attractive and provide unforgettable customer service.

In an article published by the Brazilian company Grupo Discabos, he teaches the characteristics of the IP audio system and how it is possible to perform a successful, practical and efficient tunnel installation with a real case to demonstrate effectiveness.

How does an IP audio system work?
First, let's understand in detail how this system works. Its operation is similar to that of a computer network. This network works according to an IP communication protocol, based on devices with unique addresses and sending specific destination packets, such as a postman with the address of the customer who will receive an order.

The audio system uses the network and a set of transmitters and receivers. The transmitters connect to audio sources (microphones, musical instruments, etc.) and convert analog waves into digital signals to send. Recipients are responsible for converting this information back into analog format.

Transmitters and receivers are connected to switches that allow transmission. Once it is encoded, the audio is sent in digital packets. As with the Internet infrastructure, each IP packet contains the source and destination address, which helps identify and carry the data to the desired points.

With all this, it's easy to see that this is a more sophisticated and robust transmission model than the traditional one, based on audio cables, right? Let's take a look at some advantages that differentiate this solution.

Proceeds
Sending audio over IP can be a more economical solution, as it reduces the cost of cabling and possible restoration. You can leverage an existing network infrastructure and adapt the project. In addition, it is also worth mentioning the higher sound quality, with the reduction of noise and interference from the equipment, once the shipment is digitized.

Modularity and scalability are other interesting points to highlight when talking about an IP audio system. Because of this, it is possible, for example, to use the same connection to install computers in different locations for different purposes. In other words, the parts are well divided so that they can adapt to separate projects.

Decentralized control can be done by equipment connected to the same network, such as a smartphone. This allows mobility and generates even more comfort and efficiency in audio management to avoid problems in real time.

How does tunnel sound work?
We have already learned how this solution is very good and versatile, and can be applied in various contexts, such as schools, universities, companies, among other examples. Let's now look at how a tunnel sound project works and then learn how the IP audio system meets this need.

Complexity
Tunnel sound is a naturally complex project because it requires a clear, defined and intelligible sound that is understandable to people even with the noise of cars. If the tunnel is from a big city with a lot of traffic, the complexity is even greater. In addition, care must be taken to avoid echoes and network outages that impair communication.

The goal is often to deal with some emergency and some special case where someone is at risk, so there is a great need to receive messages in real time to avoid accidents and major inconveniences.

In general, in tunnel projects, the goal is to connect audio devices and the main cockpit of each tunnel to an operational control center (CCO) to send messages from there.

Without ringing, when you need to communicate with a driver, a CCO operator must send a radio or make a call to the tunnel operator to communicate with the driver. This wastes a lot of time and puts that person's life at greater risk.

Solution
With the IP system, it is ideal to install microphones in the tunnel cabin and operations center to connect them over the network. Therefore, the operator can use his microphone to send a message directly whenever he notices any irregularity in the place. Packages are sent instantly, without loss of information or quality.

Due to scalability and modularity, tunnels at different points on the same road can be connected to the same local wired network and controlled by the same CCO.

The IP audio system is a technology that lately has gained many admirers and customers due to its economy and the flexibility and sound quality it offers. The result is easily scalable and allows the aggregation of other equipment on the same network.
