International. Gemini Man, produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee, opened worldwide on Oct. 6 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. It is a film that, with its 4K resolution, its 3D visualization and with an HFR (high frame rate) of 120 fps (images per second) crosses the borders of technology.
Ang Lee is recognized as a pioneer of HFR. Gemini Man is an action thriller starring Will Smith, who plays the role of Henry Brogan, an elite assassin who suddenly becomes the target and object of pursuit of a mysterious young man apparently able to anticipate his every move.
The film makes clear the advantages that the format and the progress registered by HFR technologies have for the cinema viewer. The dozens of stars attending the premiere will witness an innovative HFR projection system, the CINITY, developed by Christie for Huaxia Film Distribution and offering the latest in HFR projection and Christie® RealLaser lighting technology.
The strategic partnership between Christie, Huaxia Film Distribution and GDC Technology Limited has led to the development of the CINITY Cinema System, based on two Christie CP4450-RGB HFR projectors.
Gemini Man has been shot in the USA, Colombia and Hungary, and its distribution is handled by Paramount Pictures, a company that has been setting the tone for film production for more than a century. Who better than her to show American audiences and the rest of the world the extraordinary clarity and realism that are synonymous with HFR technologies.
For the premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre, the CINITY will be configured to generate a brightness of up to 28 feet-lambert thanks to Christie's laser optical system technology, which ensures an optimal 3D viewing experience with 4K resolution at 120fps per eye.
Paramount will distribute a whole range of versions of Gemini Man ranging from 2D and 4K at 24fps, to 3D and 2K at 60fps, so that the film is compatible with cinema projectors in operation at the moment. Also in 3D and 2K at 120fps for Dolby Cinema. In addition, it has developed a 3D and 4K version at 120fps as a result of its partnership with Christie, which is precisely the modality that will be seen in the premiere and in a few privileged Asian cities.
Lee, famous for the drama of his plots and for the adoption of new technologies, has in his possession an Oscar for best foreign language film for The Tiger and the Dragon and two Oscars for best direction for Brokeback Mountain and The Life of Pi. His 2016 film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is the first feature film ever shot at an image rate of 120fps, more than doubling the 48fps of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by Peter Jackson and quintupling the standard speed of 24fps.
Christie's RealLaser projectors meet DCI standards and exceed 95% of the 2020 Recommendation, with no filtering or color correction. The rich, deep and intense chromaticism, and the high level of contrast, translate into amazing visuals, considerably reinforcing the efficiency in the exhibition.
