Sony brings 4K to the medical sector with the new monitors

International. Sony has announced its commitment to incorporate 4K technology in the healthcare sector with two new 4K monitors, the 31" (LMD-X310MD) and 55" (LMD-X550MD) models.

Sony also plans to unveil a 4K product line designed to complement every step of the surgical imaging workflow. The new products, which are expected to be available in the coming months, include a 4K recorder for medical use, 4K video via an IP converter and a 4K content management system.

"4K technology provides surgeons, physicians and clinical teams with advanced visualization during interventions. That translates into an excellent visualization of the general anatomy and blood vessels, with virtually no pixelation, even during close-up viewing," said John Herman, Head of Surgery Marketing at Sony Professional Solutions. "This allows surgeons, doctors and operating room staff to see much more detail than with HD resolution. It is vital for minimally invasive procedures and provides greater transparency for education and training."

When medical teams use 4K displays they have the ability to simultaneously view a four-part view of four Full HD (1920x1080) images from other sources, in addition to images from endoscopic camera systems. Surgeons can also zoom in on a 4K image without getting the usual pixelated result associated with lower-resolution technologies.

Sony's development of a full line of 4K medical products will help create compatibility between display technologies and other devices in the surgical imaging workflow. Increasing 4K bandwidth requires products that can properly display, distribute, and store larger 4K files.

Two new Sony 4K medical monitors, the 31" (LMD-X310MD) and 55" (LMD-X550MD) models, can display images from a camera system for endoscopic surgery or other medical image capture systems. These monitors offer an improvement of the hd video resolution to 4K. Using the brightest LCD panel technology in the industry, the new 4K monitors feature a sleek, unique chassis, a splash-protecting, easy-to-clean, borderless glass display, a thin frame, as well as OptiContrast panel technology to deliver high contrast with minimal reflections.

Both monitors incorporate Sony's exclusive image enhancement technology called A.I.M.E. (Advanced Image Multiple Enhancer). This technology allows to accentuate the color and structure of the video image independently to provide real-time image analysis functions according to the surgeon's preference.
