International. To ensure interoperability in the provision of videoconferencing and video calling services, with high levels of quality and easy to use, leading companies in the telecommunications sector agreed on an open solution to standardize videoconferencing services.
The agreement, which was signed by telecom operators Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, Telecom Italia and Telefonica and industry equipment suppliers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Italtel, Nokia Siemens Networks, Polycom and Quanta Computer, defined a common set of technical specifications based on existing 3GPP and GSMA standards.
According to the companies, the growth of the videoconferencing market has been limited by a lack of interoperability between networks and manufacturers, making current videoconferencing services only work in closed environments.
In addition, when changing networks and / or video equipment from different manufacturers located in different countries, significant difficulties had to be faced.
This agreement implies the creation of an open environment that will allow to offer videoconferencing and video-call services, easy to use, through different networks and video equipment, regardless of the country of origin and destination of the call and without the need to have the support of the operator's service center.
The initiative, which is open to all operators and providers who wish to join, seeks to turn videoconferencing into a fully interoperable mass market in which everything can be connected from mobile phones and tablets to large telepresence rooms, in a single network with global support.
