International. Taking advantage of the fact that oled bulbs when off are transparent, BASF and Philips integrated them into the roofs of vehicles, allowing a clear view outwards and providing light to the interior when they are on.
The characteristics of OLED light sources allowed this development, because they have a thickness of 1.8 millimeters and can be transparent. The entire OLED surface illuminates with a diffused light, generating soft lighting that produces fewer hard shadows than focal light.
The benefits of OLED lighting allow new possibilities for automotive engineering, since the transparent structure can be combined with transparent solar cells, in addition to offering other design options for vehicles.
According to Felix Görth, Director oled and Organic Photovoltaics at BASF, "this combination allows the driver to enjoy a unique feeling of open space while generating electricity during the day and giving a pleasant warm light that floods the interior of the car at night, thanks to the highly efficient and transparent OLED lights."
The transparent roof for cars is the result of research by BASF and Philips within the framework of the OLED 2015 initiative, promoted by the government of Germany. In this project, the partners develop innovative architectural materials and components, as well as in new machinery producing lighting solutions with highly efficient OLED technology.
