Brazil. The Instituto de Investigaciones Tecnológicas (IPT) of Sao Paulo revealed that it is preparing to venture into the development of projects that allow improving the qualities of LED lamps for commercial, residential, industrial and public applications.
The objective of the institute is to generate an innovation process that allows the development of products with greater energy efficiency and better heat dissipation capacity. Precisely, Oswaldo Sánchez Junior, researcher at IPT, told local media that "we are acquiring software and we are training ourselves with tools that allow the development of projects with a view to energy, thermal and environmental performance."
Among the new resources available is the possibility of performing a photometric characterization by means of a goniophotometer, a device acquired from Germany by the Institute, in partnership with Finep and the Brazilian Association of the Lighting Industry (ABILUX), for US$1 million.
In that sense, Sanchez said that in Brazil this industry is very competitive although it is formed mostly by small and medium-sized companies. "The new resources will allow replacing procedures that today are empirical in the manufacture of luminaires to begin to create a culture towards the systematization of this knowledge," he said.
The interest of the Brazilian market in improving the levels of production and competitiveness of companies working in the lighting industry is not surprising, if one takes into account that by 2013 it is expected that this market will reach a share of 16% in the field of lighting generating revenues of US $ 20,000 million.
