Colombia. Colombia's Superintendency of Industry and Commerce ordered Zoom Video Communications Inc. to improve its security measures to protect Colombians' personal data and information.
The decision, adopted through Resolution 74519 of November 2020, was issued after the Superindustria conducted an administrative investigation informally since April 14, 2020, with a view to establishing whether ZOOM complied with Colombian regulations on information security, and whether said company implements the principle of demonstrated responsibility in that matter.
During the investigation it was established that ZOOM manages Personal Data of users who used its services to participate in more than 17 million meetings, between April 1 and 28, 2020.
Although ZOOM has taken steps to improve its levels of information security, according to a recent pronouncement by the Federal Trade Commission of the United States (FTC) – the US counterpart of the SIC – some shortcomings still remain. Therefore, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce considers it necessary to issue administrative orders of a preventive nature to guarantee the principle and duty of security.
ZOOM must comply with the orders of this Authority within a period of four (4) months, for which it must submit a certification issued by an entity - national or foreign -, independent, impartial, professional and specialized in information security issues.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vast majority of citizens have increased the use of technological applications as a means of communication for academic, professional and personal purposes. ZOOOM provides a video conferencing service that includes remote conferencing, online meetings, chat and mobile collaboration services.
