Light, a new weapon against Covid

Mexico. Tecnolite, as part of its cycle of conferences called "Passionate about Light", presented a talk in which it was able to offer a first look at the research done with UV emissions to deactivate up to 99.9999% of viruses and bacteria, including SARS-CoV-2, its pros and cons.

The talk, in which more than 400 attendees participated, was in charge of Rafael Álvarez, Engineering Research and Development Manager of Grupo Construlita, who highlighted the research focused, according to the dissemination of the current epidemic, on the idea that covid-19 is transmitted through droplets of body fluids expelled from the nose or mouth of an infected person.

The idea is that these larger droplets when expelled quickly fall to the ground. That's the position the WHO (World Health Organization) has taken since the beginning of the pandemic, and that's why we've kept a "healthy distance."

However, recently a group of experts have reported that the organization is underestimating the role of airborne transmission, where much smaller droplets (called aerosols) remain suspended in the air. These aerosols can travel farther than droplets and remain in an area even when an infected person is gone.

In his talk Rafael explained how recently much has been heard about UV technology and how you can attack viruses with it. Although it is not something new, a range of this type of frequencies has specific characteristics that, when exposed, help in the mutation of the DNA of unwanted organisms, generating an alteration in the RNA that makes it impossible for organisms to reproduce and therefore becomes harmless, all this thanks to the specific use of UV C rays.

"The relationship that UV rays have with visible light is that they are neighbors of frequencies, however, for their healthy use it must be well understood and well used because it also has a harmful counterpart for human cells at the level of skin and eyes, which can cause from a slight burn to develop a type of cancer known as carcinogenesis if they are not properly managed by experts, "- Rafael Álvarez highlighted.
