Brazil. Through a mapping work of the Epson company in conjunction with Projeta Rio, the monument "Christ the Redeemer" of Rio de Janeiro Brazil, had a human face and sent a message of peace in the language of signs (Libra) on the night of December 31, 2018.
"For this mapped projection, we simultaneously used six projectors from Epson's most powerful model, the Pro L25000U. Each of these devices has 25,000 lumens and three-chip 3LCD technology, which emit images with a quality superior to Full HD. With strategic positioning and laser technology, we achieved the challenge," said Gabriel Gonçalves, Business Manager of Epson Brazil.
For the first time, Christ the Redeemer showed images projected on both the front and back of its surface in real size. One of the high points was an illusory 180-degree rotation of the statue, in which the Christ turned to the neighborhoods of the city that remain behind him and issued a message of peace in sign language (Libra) through videomapping techniques. The projections were seen from the neighborhoods near the Floresta da Tijuca and were broadcast on a screen on Copacabana beach.
"Mapping projection technology makes it possible to create various types of visual effects. Our goal was to do something related to the grandeur that one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World deserves. 'Cariocas' and tourists who were in the city during the past New Year's celebrations witnessed the magnitude of this project. Even those who were able to accompany the event on television were shocked by the visual effects produced by the projectors," Gonçalves added.
Projeta Rio
Projeta Rio was created at the beginning of 2018 as a cultural action of digital inclusion, conducting videomapping workshops for young people from the communities of Rocinha, Vidigal and Santa Marta. 40 hours of classes were taught that initiated dozens of young people in the creation and realization of mapping projections. The dynamics of the workshops included analog and digital rehearsals of art and practice with specialized software.
One of the results of the workshops is a collaborative videomapping coordinated by VJ Notívago. It is the collaborative mapping that was projected on the front and back surfaces of the christ the Redeemer statue after the New Year's fires.
