Latin America. Walmart has installed more than 1.5 million LED luminaires in more than 6,000 stores, parking lots, distribution centers and corporate offices in ten countries, including some latin American locations.
With energy costs traditionally accounting for one of the company's largest operating expenses, the monumental energy initiative over the past decade has reduced lighting energy consumption and costs by more than $100 million.
"Energy is one of the key operating expenses we can reduce while delivering system upgrades that improve the customer's shopping experience. The ripple effect of these conversions to LED across the business is truly staggering," said Mark Vanderhelm, Walmart's Vice President of Energy. "
The COMMERCIAL LED lighting initiative between Walmart and GE began 10 years ago with the lighting of cooling screens and has grown to include parking and interior lighting. Many stores now also feature Current's TriGain technology, which is designed to improve product visibility and color vibrancy in areas such as production departments.
Walmart is also being intensively activated to complete the modernization of LED controls and lighting in 100 percent of its distribution centers in the United States, along with a new initiative to replace all other forms of general lighting with LEDs.
Walmart's investment in energy efficiency has reduced energy use per square foot by more than 12 percent since 2010. Its INVESTMENTS in LEDs are part of Walmart's science-based emissions reduction plan to meet its goal of reducing emissions by 18 percent by 2025 (according to the 2015 winds) in its own operations through a combination of increased energy efficiency, renewable energy supply and improvements in the cooling systems and efficiency of its fleets.
