International. Leo is the new sound reinforcement system for large shows developed by Meyer Sound, which was successfully tested in the last version of the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco, in which more than 100,000 people gathered.
This system was selected by Another Planet, producer of Outside Lands, to ensure sound quality in the performances of renowned singers and bands such as Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Metallica and Foo Fighters
To cover the main audience area beyond the delay tower, more than 83 meters from the stage, the provider of the Pro Media/UltraSound sound system from Hercules, California raised at one end of the oval-shaped Polo Field of Golden Gate Park two main arrangements of 15 LEO speakers each.
An equally low power was introduced through side arrangements of 12 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements, plus a central grouping of 10 700-HP subwoofers, all in cardioid configuration. This system was complemented by two delay towers (a second at 152 meters) held 16 Milo speakers hung in two eight-speaker arrays, while the CQ-1, CQ-2, MSL-4 and UPA-1P speakers were deployed for frontfill, VIP stands and a VIP tent respectively.
Big Mick Hughes, Metallica's FOH engineer, said: "Metallica's bass drum uses a considerable amount of high frequencies to create the required attack. There are parts during the show where the volume of the bass drum can activate the high-frequency limiters of a typical system. To my surprise this was not the case with Leo."
