International. Philips has joined a three-year campaign, created by The Climate Group, to accelerate the global shift from lighting to LED technology. The objective of this campaign is to promote benefits such as energy savings or the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
Marc de Jong, manager of professional lighting solutions, says that "this partnership underlines the company's commitment, in health and well-being, to drive the wave of innovation and provide meaningful solutions to improve people's quality of life."
Currently, lighting accounts for about 19% of global electricity production. A total switch to LED could reduce that consumption by 40% globally. This translates into $173 billion in savings in operating expenses and elimination of 670 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
"In the coming years, we will work with Philips to highlight opportunities for governments and corporations in low-carbon economy investment, focusing on smart lighting technologies," says Mark Kenber, Climate Group Manager.
Several pilot programs are already being carried out in cities such as Hong Kong, Mumbai, London and New York.
