Mexico. With the aim of encouraging the influx of public, the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Mexico contemplates the lighting of 38 sites, including buildings, streets and monuments located in seven municipalities of the Teotihuacan Valley.
The convents and haciendas that surround the archaeological zone of this region have been enjoyed only during the day, but with "the lighting of the sites an atmosphere will be created that invites tourists to stay until late at night, for which exhibitions, fairs and concerts will be given," said the general director of the Commission for the Tourist Development of the Teotihuacan Valley, Francisco José de la Vega Aragon.
The lighting of buildings, monuments and other emblematic sites of the Teotihuacan Valley will cost US$780,000, said Carlos Santiago Vega, head of the General Directorate of Electrification of the Government of the State of Mexico.
He also stressed that 14 of the buildings that will be illuminated are under the protection of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and the remaining 24 are in charge of the municipal governments.
This initiative seeks to increase the annual influx of visitors, going from 2.5 million that are currently received to 3.5 million at the end of this six-year term. The project does not consider the illumination of the pyramids.
