International. IMS Research extended its predictions on the global lighting market (lamps and luminaires) until 2020. LEDs continue to improve in efficiency and in the quantity and quality of lighting they emit, all while falling into costs.
It is predicted that by 2015, LEDs will produce more than 180 lumens per watt. Additionally, with the development of various dispersion methods, the LED management is creating new products that can mimic current lighting technologies.
The report says that the biggest impact of these improvements is that LED lighting will not be pigeonholed into any niche lighting market, but in the long run it will need to be able to penetrate all viable markets that currently use a number of different technologies.
The rapid adoption of LEDs in conjunction with their long life will have a profound effect on the global lighting market in the near future. As more and more connections are filled with LEDs, the market for replacing lamps and luminaires will decrease.
This is combined with the year-over-year decrease in prices of LED lamps and luminaires, which will lead the market to grow slowly in 2013 and decrease in 2014. By 2020 it is estimated that this technology will cover 70% of the market but on that date its growth will be stagnant at 2%.
