High Cost Affects Smart Building Adoption

Alto costo afecta adopción de edificios inteligente

International. High upfront cost is the top barrier to smart technology adoption for 63% of property owners and operators in North America, according to new research.

This is almost double the second deterrent to ongoing operating costs (33%). Climate control/HVAC is the most widely adopted application, with energy efficiency and sustainability driving adoption.

These are just some of the insights uncovered by a comprehensive research project conducted by Harbor Research and funded by members of the Association for Smart Homes & Buildings, ASHB. Titled "Smart Building Technology and Market Trends," the flagship research project surveyed 330 commercial building owners and operators in the U.S. and Canada.

"Our industry is at a critical crossroads," says ASHB Board Chair Brian Ensign of Superior Essex Communications. "We are moving beyond basic smart monitoring to automation and the eventual adoption of AI, and climate and HVAC systems are driving this evolution. But our report clearly demonstrates the many barriers we need to overcome in order for this to move forward smoothly."

The research uncovered perceptions, preferences, and reservations about the adoption and use of smart building technologies across multiple building types, use cases, and purchasing behaviors. The results provide providers with a clear view of prevailing challenges and practical recommendations on opportunities to address barriers to adoption.

"This was a great research project that involved multiple surveys and comprehensive analyses," said ASHB Executive Director Greg Walker. "The high level of engagement from funders and supporters really shows the interest and need for this kind of buyer knowledge for smart building providers."

An executive summary is available for download here. Currently, the full project is only available to funding organizations, but will be available for purchase by the public at the ASHB Store after a four-month embargo period. Contact Marta Klopotowska at [email protected] for more information.
