Mexico. On the occasion of International Women's Day and with the aim of promoting the inclusion of women in science and technology, in addition to engineering and mathematics (STEM), a day of multidisciplinary activities was held at the Cisco offices in Mexico City by the International Organization Greenlight for Girls, attended by 150 girls aged 11 to 15 from the American School Foundation, Amextra, Mazahua Community and the Pedagogical Institute for Language Problems IAP and daughters of employees of the company.
The welcome was given by Gerrie Martinez executive responsible for the Disney account at Cisco who by TelePresencia, from California, invited the attendees to think big about their future and that technology can be a way of life, not only on a personal level, but also as a profession through the engineering studio, mathematics, science and information technology (IT), which will also help to reduce the gap that exists in terms of the lower percentage of women working in these disciplines.
During 7 hours of activities and after an integration session through a Mandala-Yoga class, the girls participated in workshops that consisted of: Programming with Scratch (playing with algorithms) and "The Hour of Code", third-dimensional programming with Alice 3D as well as video games and robots (IBM TJBot), in addition to virtual reality, satellite communications and Lego Serious Play, where the girls were challenged to imagine their future by building a proposal and that, among others, consisted of the assembly of a virtual reality of video games, a medical laboratory to cure cancer and an environmentally friendly structure, among others.
The girls also colored, thanks to the phenomenon of capillarity, ornamental flowers (gerberas) with special pigments and had the opportunity to paint the robes they received as part of the outfit, as well as backpacks with various gifts related to the themes of the day. Finally, a play with the THEME OF STEM was presented, in which the girls were explained through dynamics the importance of being interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The activities and workshops were given by 90 women and men volunteers from Cisco Mexico and its partners: Oracle, IBM, Inmersys, Elara, Avantare, the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), Robotix, Epic Queen and Laboratoria.
