That's why the Philips company called for a shift to LED lighting around the world, helping to combat climate change, save energy and improve people's lives through greater well-being, safety and productivity in the environment in which they live and work.
The company maintains that a point of development has already been reached in LED lighting that makes it can be used in almost all applications with high quality.
To this is added that about two-thirds of lighting is based on technologies developed before 1970, which waste energy, making lighting currently account for 19% of the world's electricity production, according to the IEA (International Energy Agency).
Harry Verhaar, Senior Director of Energy and Climate Change at Philips Lighting, said: "LED lighting offers significant savings in energy use and maintenance costs, while increasing people's sense of safety and comfort on the streets and public spaces, in buildings and at home."
He added that across the globe the switch to LED lighting can cut energy consumption for lighting by 40%, equivalent to 670 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and production equivalent to 640 medium-sized power plants. More than two-thirds of the benefits can be achieved in the commercial and industrial world.
