International. Researchers at the company Simens have discovered a new dark-red luminescent material for LEDs. This phosphorus that is described as stable (although details are not yet available) is an oxynitride that apparently emits a wavelength up to 30 nm longer than other materials.
This material was developed using HTE (High Performance Experimentation) technique that allows automated evaluation of different combinations of materials rather than hand testing. The researchers analyzed more than 660 sample variants from twelve different material combinations over a period of a few months to determine emission wavelength, light intensity, and structural phases.
LEDs are lighting that helps save energy while preserving a long service life; however, the selection of colors of this type is still very limited, so researchers are looking for new variants.
Small differences in the composition of a luminescent material are of great influence on its emission properties. Therefore, it is necessary to vary the composition of the material in small steps, this leads to a large number of samples that cannot be produced or analyzed by hand.
The new luminescent material can be used, for example, in warm shades of white LEDs for general lighting, illumination of LCD screens and for automotive applications.
