Evolving PoE is the future of connectivity

Mexico. With the approval of the IEEE 803.3af standard in June 2003, the characteristics of poE equipment and technology that carried in a single line the data flow and power supply for IP devices located in inaccessible places, or devoid of electricity, were formally regulated, without calculating that this technology could define the future of connectivity and the possibility for buildings to exist, the smart cities and industries that are a reality today.

According to Juan Pablo Borray, who will be present at GSIC, (Group of Intelligent and Cooperative Systems) which is the most relevant event in IT and OT infrastructure for the region and will be held between March 13 and 16 in Playa del Carmen - Mexico, "in its basic version, launched in 2002, the PoE began delivering 15 watts and thanks to its functionality, the success was instantaneous, which led to its technological and commercial development generating a permanent dynamic to deliver more and more energy. In parallel, from Panduit, we worked to provide a network infrastructure in line with these advances and today we continue to be at the forefront to accompany this permanent evolution of PoE".

From that moment, the evolution of the standard advanced towards poE+, which delivered 30 watts, and later with PoE++ which could deliver up to 60 watts. Today, the latest PoE standard, IEEE 802.3bt, allows a twisted pair cable to simultaneously carry more data and 90 watts of electricity to very robust devices.

This new standard, 802.3bt, requires the use of four pairs of cables to meet a power demand for systems with higher demands, such as the implementation and large number of devices such as demanding video surveillance systems equipped with real-time recognition and processing systems, and boardrooms with screens, projectors and videoconferencing communications connected to the network, points out Borray.

Similarly, this new stage of PoE is prepared with the purpose of supporting the projects of the next smart buildings, which are no longer designed without 100% LED lighting and without the use of wide-spectrum controllers that require greater power and need each device to have its own IP address.

Likewise, the constant advance of PoE and its applications for the Internet of Things will be definitive in the new generations of homes, cities and industries, areas in which the proliferation of connected devices that, according to Gartner, will reach next year to 20,400 million connected objects worldwide, taking into account that only 10% of these will be smartphones.

Looking a little further ahead, and thinking about future regulations for PoE, Juan Pablo Borray de Panduit, ensures that this technology may end up replacing the electrical networks and for this reason, the new standards would have to include this wiring that, although it transports data, also behaves like an electrical network. "That is why future regulations must take into account the specifications of this wiring and require that it effectively supports each application and does not pose any risk to the safety of the place where it is being installed," says Borray.

Finally, adds the Business Development Manager for Latin America of Panduit that "depending on this near future, the company is preparing with the launch of new products that will be presented for the LATAM region in the second Q of this 2019. It is the thinnest category 6 A cable in the world, the new PoE extenders for distances up to 600 meters and the field-terminateable plug that supplies the use of wall plates and with which the cable is connected to the final device. "

Undoubtedly, this Power Over Ethernet technology has become one of the most important technologies of the present because together with data transport, it has practically replaced electrical networks and, in a proven way, every day it becomes more necessary for the connected world of the near future.

This will be one of the central themes of GSIC, the most relevant event in IT and OT infrastructure for the region, which brings together the most important System Integrators and End Users from different industries, with the purpose of interacting and enriching their perception and experience in innovative technologies, services and business models.

In this 2019 edition, GSIC reaches its 20th anniversary and celebrates its meeting from March 13 to 16 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen. See all the information of this event in http://panduitgsic.com/
