aeropuerto santiago de chile

The new terminal has the capacity to receive 33 million passengers annually. The technological installation included 5 buildings, central processor and 4 boarding halls.

In 2016 the new international terminal of the airport of the capital of Chile began to be built, it is composed of a central nucleus which has an area of 175 thousand square meters, where users can carry out all the airport procedures and four breakwaters, which are the extensions of the central building where the boarding halls are located.

The current terminal has 18 boarding bays which increase to 67 for this year, which will allow its capacity to increase from 2,400 passengers per hour to more than 5,000.

AVI Latin America spoke with engineer Jorge Cañete, one of those in charge of installing the technological solutions of this building, which were delivered in September 2021. He stressed that some of the systems implemented were:

- PAS: Central evacuation audio system for all buildings and that comply with NFPA regulations. The system is IP and has network redundancy in addition to redundancy of Audio Matrix and amplifiers, plus a supervision of audio circuits through end-of-line cards, in the more than 2,200 speakers installed.
The project requirement required an STI of 0.6 in public places and 0.4 in closed areas such as bathrooms and offices.
- CCTV: Video surveillance system with a very strong requirement of complete coverage without blind spots temporarily, that is, more than 1,500 fixed cameras distributed throughout all places, plus PTZ cameras for the reinforcement and operation of the end customer.
- ACS: Ikusi access control system, there are more than 600 controlled doors, with integration to the CCTV system in case of fraudulent access and where 2 very important requirements are met, first the security and border limit within the terminal and the evacuation flows, where in case of emergency, the flow and passage through the controlled doors, it must not produce resistance.
- FIDS, CUSS, CUPPS: Flight information systems, passenger processing and self-checking are other systems present and developed by the CJV team.

Jorge Cañete stressed that "The present integration is to the AODB, the airport database where passenger information, airlines and scheduling of all flights arriving and departing from Santiago de Chile are handled. The systems involved are FIDS, CUSS, CUPPS, PAS, ACS."

Technological and process challenges
In this process, difficulties were presented from the design, especially in terms of the coordination of specialties, general considerations and interferences in the projection of the installed element.

"Later in the construction stage there were great difficulties in terms of planning and coordination between the different subcontracts, producing in some cases rework to correct some terminations. As for logistics and although we lived 2 years of project in Pandemic, there were no major delays, managing to meet the contractual deadlines, "said engineer Cañete.

He added that in the bidding process they made a list of accepted brands and manufacturers, filtering in the first instance that the integrators considered only good quality brands and recognized worldwide.

"Then, as is normal, a price competition and compliance with each point of the requirements of the Bases. Finally, there is always a range of responsibility assumed by the integrator in terms of the final number of equipment to be considered and the implementation of the systems," he said.

Results achieved
Customer satisfaction is maximum, said Jorge Cañete. The systems are mostly working as required and the airport on this date is fully functional.

"Some systems stand out from others such as PAS that, done all the analysis, is met and over passes totally with the expectations of the client, achieving an intelligibility of the word of very high level. The most complex system has been the Access Control System, where the integration with the supplier of the doors and the large number of workers who use and access daily in the areas, has not allowed to have a clean and one hundred percent functional system, working to this day in survey of observations and minor repairs , " Said.

Professionals and companies involved
In this project of the international terminal of the airport of Santiago de Chile, the concessionaire is Nuevo Pudahuel (NPU), a consortium between Vinci Airport, Vinci Concesiones and Astaldi Concesiones. The construction company is a Joint Venture between Vinci Construction Grand Project and Astaldi Ingeniería y Construcción (CJV)
