Colombia. The initiative that in recent years has sought to help the planet by reducing energy consumption for an hour at night, will be repeated this Saturday, March 24.
WWF, the organization in charge of the day, calls on citizens, companies, the media, public and private entities and civil society organizations to be part of the great national movement for forests, an initiative launched by Earth Hour 2018 as a response to the worrying and accelerated process of deforestation that takes place in Colombia: 489 hectares are cut down every day; that means that, every day, the equivalent in forests disappears, to 690 soccer fields.
This national movement joins Bosques Territorios de Vida, the comprehensive strategy of Control of Deforestation and Forest Management led by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, which is supported by the UN-REDD program and is implemented by UNDP, FAO and UN Environment in a joint work with the Forest Carbon Cooperative Fund, the World Bank and the Action Fund.
This strategy aims to strengthen sustainable development that includes forests as the axis of the economy, ensuring compliance with the goal of zero net deforestation throughout the country by 2030.
How to participate? Colombians have three simple calls to action:

This year, Earth Hour has the support of strategic allies such as the National Police of Colombia, the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley and the Administrative Department of Environmental Management (Dagma) and Crepes & Waffles.

They will celebrate Earth Hour with the cyclo-biennials and/or simultaneous events: Cali, Montería, Valledupar, Pasto, Cartagena, Ibagué, Tunja, Neiva, Pereira, Barranquilla, Floridablanca, Bogotá, Medellín, Planeta Rica, Leticia, Bucaramanga, Mocoa, Sabaneta, Quibdó, Santa Marta, Villavicencio, Cúcuta, Santa Fe de Antioquia, Manizales and Armenia.
