. The German company Bayer MaterialScience and the company specialized in lighting, Osrom, presented the advances of a joint research that allowed them to develop OLED lights with a longer service life, a notable improvement in the clarity of the light emitted and greater energy efficiency.
This is possible thanks to the use of an extremely thin polycarbonate-based sheet, called Makrofol, developed by Bayer and which allows to direct the light of organic diodes more efficiently.
According to Klaus Meyer, an engineer and developer at Bayer Material Science, when organic molecules are illuminated inside OLEDs, the beams of light that are reflected at the interface between the glass layer and the air are returned to the interior, so that a large part of the light does not manage to leave the system. Using the Makrofol layer eliminates this problem.
"Thanks to a sheet with a thickness of only 300 micrometers we managed to get more light to the outside. Light performance is thus increased by up to 60%," says the team of researchers from Bayer Material Science.
In addition, normally the color of the light changes slightly according to the angle of view due to an optical effect caused by the internal structure of the OLEDs, but with the sheet, the lighting surface always offers the same homogeneous light. In addition, the Makrofol layer makes it possible to extract more light using less electrical energy, thus increasing its energy efficiency and service life.
