Philips Lighting announced that it has signed its 700th member for the enabled LED luminaire licensing and bulb retrofitting program, and those 100 new members have joined in the past nine months. The program, which gives companies licenses and support to use their patented innovations, saw membership growth in Asian companies in the same period. Successful LED enablement is recognized worldwide and the last 100 new members represent a broad mix of small and medium-sized companies, among other assets, in bulb retrofitting and private retail brands. The emergence of members in Asia reflects the maturation of LED in the Asian market, increasing the complacency of companies in developing markets to respect and take advantage of patented technology. "At Philips Lighting, we believe that open innovation will help the industry thrive by sharing its IP through its EnabLED licensing program, which encourages growth and innovation in the LED market. The licenses give access to a wide range of basic LED control and system-level technologies available for use in its brands LED-based luminaires and bulb retrofitting for the general, architectural, entertainment and theatrical lighting markets . Of the 700 partners in the program, 20% actively use the logo enabled to communicate membership in their products," the company said in a statement. **Growing the market** The company has pioneered several of the key advances in lighting over the past 125 years and enabled the development of the LED industry over the past 20 years. Few companies can reach this level of R&D investment.
